All the baseball draft picks from the Mid-Suburban League, St. Viator, the Maines, Leyden and 40-plus other schools throughout the North and Northwest Suburbs
Updated July 15, 2025 The Major League Baseball draft has changed significantly since the first one was held in 1965 and included Forest View pitcher Tom Lundgren, who would be the first player from the Mid-Suburban League selected. There used to be massive amounts of draft rounds with multiple phases in January and June, based on whether the player was in high school or college, and the distribution of draft information after the early rounds could be a bit secretive. Many players were still finishing their high school or college seasons when the draft was held in early June.
Now the draft has been reduced to 20 rounds with significant national TV coverage before the All-Star game in mid-July. Information on selections is easily accessible and available immediately on the Internet. Despite all the analysis, no sports draft is quite the unpredictable crapshoot like baseball.
So here’s a look at all the MSL players who have been selected in the draft out of high school or college. Those who played in the major leagues are boldfaced in all capital letters. This also includes lists of MSL players chosen by high school, players chosen by MLB organization and those drafted multiple times. Spoiler alert - Tom Lundgren not only was the first MSL player drafted but he has an unbreakable record of number of times he was chosen.

This also includes players drafted from St. Viator, Maine West, Maine East, Maine South and Leyden and 40-plus schools from the north and northwest suburbs. As a side note, one of my favorite parts while working at the Daily Herald was talking to kids after they were drafted for stories. Even in the later rounds it was still typically a big thrill for many of them.
It is likely I’ve missed some players here so if I did please let me know at marty.maciaszek@gmail.com. The information compiled here is through the Baseball Reference draft history database. Going through those lists I came across a few MSL players I missed from the first go-round with this list a couple of years ago. Also a big thank you to Dion Martorano of the Des Plaines Journal & Topics for helping fill in some gaps on missed players!
