MSL Track and Field: Girls State Meet History
All the Top 10 team finishes, individual and relay state champions and medalists, honor roll of top performances and more fun facts and figures
Updated May 24, 2025 with 2025 state meet results
Prospect’s Trudi Rebsamen, Forest View’s Vanessa Calabrese and Hersey’s Kathy LaPorte set a high bar for the Mid-Suburban League in the first IHSA girls state track and field meet in 1973. Rebsamen won the 220- and 440-yard races on the way to five individual titles, LaPorte won the 80-yard hurdles and Calabrese took gold in the discus as their teams all finished in the top 10 of the team standings.
It was only a beginning for the MSL’s rich history in the sport. Wheeling’s Dana Miroballi cemented her place as one of the greatest distance runners in state history in the 1980s with six individual track titles and 4-for-4 sweep of cross country crowns. Steve Currins turned Palatine into a perennial trophy contender in the 1990s against the sprint-heavy powers led by East St. Louis Lincoln and Evanston.
Barrington’s Jody Gitelis built her own remarkable program that led to the first team state title by a MSL boys or girls program in 2007. Prospect has followed suit under the direction of Pete Wintermute to bring another girls track title trophy back to the MSL in 2024. And the list of individual champions includes the Knights’ Erin Reese, who won the discus in 2014 and competed in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in the hammer throw.
The 2025 meet saw Prospect finish second to Homewood-Flossmoor to become the first MSL girls track program to claim four consecutive top-three trophies. Wheeling (1985-87) and Palatine (1991-93) captured three in succession.
The Knights’ 3,200 relay team also became only the third in any girls relay to win five consecutive state titles - South Shore from Chicago did it in the 800 (1982-86) and East St. Louis Lincoln in the 1,600 (1983-87). And a record 10:01.12 by Barrington sophomore Mia Sirois in the 3,200 and hurdles titles by Conant’s Daisha Brunson in the 100 and Palatine’s Aisha Kazeem in the 300 gave the MSL four champions for the second year in a row. The only other time the league had that many was in the first meet in 1973.
So here is the rich history of MSL girls track and field in the state meet. All the individual and relay medalists. An honor roll of the top five performances in every event that includes a few converted yards-to-meters times that still impressively hold up today. And much more.
There are some older times and relay names I’m trying to track down through various internet newspaper searches. For a number of years multiple newspaper results ran only the winner’s time among all the medal-winners. The MSL was also fortunate to have tremendous coverage of the sport through the years that included the talented work from the late Reggie Gorski and Michael Eaken.
Enjoy the memories that will surely have additions in 2025 and beyond!
