MSL Track and Field: Boys State Meet History
All the Top 10 team finishes, individual and relay state champions and medalists, honor roll of top performances and more fun facts and figures
Updated May 31, 2025
The Mid-Suburban League was still nearly 30 years away from existence when Palatine’s Irwin “Eddie” Hahnfeldt (discus) and Arlington’s Norbert Rohlwing (880 yards) set the foundation for success with state titles in 1935.
Much has changed as the javelin event Hahnfeldt also medaled in was discontinued in 1939, running events switched to metric measures in 1980 and the meet permanently moved from the University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium to Eastern Illinois’ O’Brien Stadium in 1974. The meet was actually two classes from 1914-25 (A and B, with a third C class in 1916 for academies and out-of-state schools) and went from one to two classes in 1975 and three classes in 2009.
What hasn’t changed is success from the MSL’s schools that continued in 2024 with Rolling Meadows’ Noah Heiber (110 hurdles) and Barrington’s Joe Bregenzer (3,200) winning Class 3A titles. Hersey’s Logan Farrell continued the throwing tradition in 2025 by winning the 3A discus crown with a toss of 196 feet, 10 1/2 inches, the best ever in the state meet by a MSL competitor. There are many legendary performers and champions, future Olympians like Jorge Torres of Wheeling and David Kendziera of Prospect and NFL players including Conant’s Andre Holmes, Barrington’s Scotty Miller and Buffalo Grove’s Tom Zbikowski.
Legendary Daily Herald prep sports guru Bob Frisk was a former trackman for the great Russ Attis at Arlington and a teammate of two-time state champions Dick Winterbauer in the shot put and William Palmer in the high jump. Bob loved the sport, couldn’t wait for the annual trips to the Palatine Relays and Wanner Invite at Prospect and was a great link to past stars that included Palatine’s Bill Bahnfleth, Duane “Bullet” Brooks and Andy Merutka. For years into the mid-’70s he ran an all-state track team that was an impressive undertaking.
I was fortunate to cover boys track as a regular beat from 1993-2000 - starting with Fremd’s Keith Lozowski winning shot and discus titles and ending with the compelling season-long “Lords of the Rings” battles between Fremd’s Ken Kemeny (shot champ) and Clark Wilson (discus champ). Meadows’ Abe Jones also won a hurdles title that year and the great Don Sage from my alma mater York won the 3,200 in a blistering state-record 8:42.89 that still stands. Not a bad meet to finish on before Jeff Newton took the baton and continued the championship-level coverage.
One of my favorite moments in covering high school sports was 1997 when Hoffman Estates finished second in Class AA, which is still the only boys state track trophy by the MSL (Palatine and Arlington won trophies in the pre-MSL days). They had a wonderfully unique coaching crew led by the late Pete Reiff, a great runner at York and disciple of Joe Newton, with David Alex and Mike Batina.
They also had arguably the greatest performer in MSL boys track history in Pierre Leinbach. He was certainly the most accomplished as he won the 110 and 300 hurdles, ran on a third-place 800 relay and took seventh in the triple jump that Saturday. Only Hoffman’s Declan Rustay in 2018 has matched Leinbach as a MSL boys medalist in the maximum four events in one state meet. Warren and Wesley Carter, Kevin Reeves, Pierre Sutton and Marquis Russell gave the 1997 Hawks sprint relay scoring speed that wasn’t a MSL norm and Ted Cnota, who Reiff admiringly called “a mountain of a man,” provided points by finishing sixth in the shot.
So here we go with the history of MSL boys track and field in the state meet. All the individual and relay medalists. An honor roll of the top five performances in every event that includes converted yards-to-meters times that still impressively hold up today. And much more. I’m still trying to track down some older times and relay names that so far I haven’t found through various internet newspaper searches. For a number of years multiple newspaper results ran only the winner’s time among all the medal-winners.
Enjoy the trip down memory lane. One that is more a distance than sprint double.

Thanks Marty for another wonderful stroll down memory lane. Can't quite understand where 50 years went, but I'll be sure to enjoy this year's meet with a bunch of old track bum buddies in Charleston next month. Mark the calendar, it'll be the first 90° day of the year.
As a real Track junkie, this is a very impressive summary of the history of the MSL!! Love reading every line! Obviously, The MSL has a RICH history, at the State Meet. On a side note, as a very proud Dad, our son JD Teach who won the state Shot Put title in 1990, also set the MSL Shot Put record 64'4" back in 1990. A record that is still is intact. He went on to U. of Illinois and was a 4 Time Big Ten Shot Put Champ and 2 Time All American. Out of 8 career attempts for a Big Ten Title, Indoor & Outdoor, he placed in the Top 3, 7 times. During his Red Shirt year, he took up Olympic weight lifting and Won the Junior National Championships and went on to take 10th in the World Championships in Bulgaria. A shoulder injury kept him out of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Thanks agian for all your work putting this together!! Coach Teach, Head Track coach at Palatine 1973-81.
